Are women more likely to be injured in car accidents?

On Behalf of | Mar 10, 2021 | Car Accidents, Injuries |

No one plans for a car accident to happen. They’re considered random, and the injuries from them can seem unpreventable sometimes. However, it’s a car manufacturer’s job to plan for the worst-case scenario and create a safe car for Missouri consumers.

Studies have found that in motor vehicle accidents, women are more likely than men to be seriously injured. Even as cars have been built to be safer, women are still disproportionally injured in most car accidents while male passengers tend to walk away with fewer injuries.

Why are women more likely to be injured?

There’s not really a good answer as to why women are more likely than men to be injured in motor vehicle accidents. But the statistic is out there, and women are 73% more likely to suffer a serious injury during an accident than male passengers.

A separate study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says it can depend on the vehicle size and type. Most of the crashes happened in smaller cars, where there’s not as much protection and impacts are more likely to be serious.

However, even in smaller cars, men suffer less serious injuries than their female counterparts. This means that it might be something to do with how the car was manufactured.

Where are women more likely to be injured?

Women reportedly had more injuries to their lower torso or legs during motor vehicle accidents. With improvements from car manufacturers, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says there’s a chance for these statistics to even out.

People aged 66 or older of either gender were more likely to have their chest injured from the seatbelts. However, it’s most likely because of the bones being more fragile, rather than something with the setup of the car.

More studies have to be done to discover the true cause of these statistics. However, if you believe that injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident were more severe due to a flaw in car manufacturing, reach out to a lawyer today to discuss your options.
