Sometimes there are terrible events that simply take your breath away. We read recently of an interstate tractor-trailer crash that killed a young mother and her infant twin daughters.

The 29-year-old mom and 18-month-old girls were killed when an 18-wheeler slammed into the back of their vehicle. Law enforcement officials have charged a Missouri truck driver with three counts of reckless homicide for his role in the violent, multivehicle crash.

According to news reports, the crash on Interstate 465 in Indianapolis, Indiana, involved six cars, a truck transporting a mobile home and the 18-wheeler.

The car carrying the mother and daughters was engulfed in flames after the collision. Seven other people were injured in the collisions and then taken to area hospitals. One of the injured was listed by medical personnel as being in critical condition.

The 57-year-old truck driver told officials that a car cut him off and that the driver then slammed on the brakes before speeding away. The trucker said that forced him to slam on the brakes before he slammed into the traffic stopped for construction on the interstate.

Investigators said the trucker was actually speeding, going “well above the posted speed limit at the time of the collision,” the news report states.

The truck driver works for a company in Sturgeon, about 145 miles northwest of St. Louis.

In far too many commercial truck accidents, the large vehicle is going too fast for conditions because the trucker is reckless, distracted or too eager to bring a long drive to a close. No matter what the reason for the recklessness, it is of no comfort to the victims and their families.
