St. Louis Post-Dispatch sportswriters are typically devoted to covering the Cardinals and Blues, with some Billikens, Saint Louis FC and of course, coverage of national teams across the sports spectrum. They rarely write about motor vehicle crashes, though that changed, at least briefly, for a local sportswriter who was recently involved in an unusual crash that involved a vehicle with no driver and an out-of-control Jeep.
One person was injured in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital, according to a news report, though it was not clear what the extent of the injuries might be.
Law enforcement officials said a vehicle was going north on Kingshighway Blvd. at Vandeventer Ave. when it crossed the street’s center line and hit an oncoming vehicle, which then spun out of control and hit two other vehicles.
The Post-Dispatch sportswriter was in a car on Vandeventer Ave. waiting to turn south on Kingshighway, so he had a bird’s eye view of the events. In fact, he said that he and the friend he was with were “sitting ducks” witnessing the multi-vehicle crashes.
He said he saw a black Hyundai car moving in traffic and that its driver jumped out. The driverless vehicle continued moving into oncoming Kingshighway traffic, the writer said. The car came to a stop on a sidewalk, he added.
Then a Jeep went through the intersection, sideswiping the vehicle the writer was in. The Jeep’s driver then inexplicably accelerated and slammed his vehicle head-on into another vehicle. The Jeep came to a stop when it crashed into a tree.
It is not yet clear why the driver of the Hyundai exited her vehicle as she did, or what the Jeep’s driver was up to when he accelerated and crashed into another vehicle. But we do know that in many auto wrecks, factors such as drunk driving, distracted driving and excess speed play major roles.
